Ever since I can remember my dad has always been listening to Nanci. What a lucky girl I am to grow up with such wonderful music! My first concert that I went to was hers when I was only about 8. I also remember writing to her and even sending a picture, only to get back a newsletter. How disappointing! I have gotten over it, so don't worry about me. If only all "musicians" could be as down to earth and talented as she is it would be such an easier world to listen to... Thank you Nanci....

Love at the Five and Dime

Just wanted to share a musical experience with you all.

My wife's Grandmother worked in a Woolworth's up near Albany, NY store for many years even after she was over seventy years old. She actually lived to be 100 + 3 weeks! She didn't take care of the counter but she worked in the pet department keeping the birds and fish happy. She was a wonderful lady. Being a guitar player, I quickly learned Nanci's "Love at the Five and Dime" after I first heard it on "One Fair Summer Evening". I played it for her many times while she was in the hospital and a nursing home. The folks in the Nursing home loved the music. It's a great thrill to play for the folks in the nursing homes. They so enjoy the music whenever they get a chance to hear some. Last October my wife's mother passed away and 2 days later, her grandmother followed. A very trying time for us all. To help me through it all I rewrote some of the lyrics to "Five and Dime" to fit Grandma and Grandpa and sang the song at Grandma's Funeral services. It was very tough to get through but when it was all over we all had shared something very special and will remember Grandma whenever we hear Nanci sing that most wonderful song. Nanci sang it early in her show at Morristown, NJ last night. My wife and I were very moved by the performance. It's wonderful where the music can take you.

When I became a true believer

BBC 2 had a three hour review of music of the eighties on new years 1989. I had taped it. Nanci featured performing 'You Made This Love A Teardrop'. I bought 'Storms' the next day. I was hooked, now ten years on her music is part of the soundtrack to my life.

Nanci Concert Experiences

We first saw Nanci at Rocky Mountain Folks Festival in 1995 and saw her again at the 25th Anniversary Concert for the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Both were great shows. I have a radio show in St.Thomas and have played Nanci's music on the show with great listener response.

Nanci Griffith is my hero

I just want to say I am new to the internet world and Nanci's site is the 3rd one I have looked for. I am a husband and a father of 7 kids. I live in Orange County, California. I was in a record store in 1988-1989 and heard the "Storms" CD playing and asked the clerk who was playing. He was a huge fan and filled me in. I purchased the "Storms" CD that day and have been a huge fan ever since. My kids have been raised on Nanci! My youngest son Brennan who is almost two years old and falls asleep to the "Other Voices" concert video every night. By the time "The wing and the wheel is on, he is a goner! In fact I can sing that song to him when he is a little antsy and it settles him right down. My oldest daughters are twins who are going to college in Utah. They are in the dance program and have done many routines to Nanci's music! My wife and I have been lucky enough to see Nanci twice here in the LA area. Just a few months ago at the House of Blues in Hollywood! Nanci, you are wonderful, keep traveling that Gulf Coast Highway! We Love You,

The first time...

I saw Nanci was in Minneapolis in 1997. Not having very much money I was never able to see her before...and unfortunately I have not had the opportunity to see her again. Everyone who loves Nanci knows that at a concert of hers you feel very at home. I felt like I had a bond with the people there because I had listened to Nanci for so long I felt like I knew why they were there. To share the magic. I couldn't sit still in my seat...the experience was just unreal to me. My mother had played Nanci around the house since I was very small, so she had been in my life for just about 20 years. When Nanci stepped onto the stage, of course she started talking in her sweet, soft voice, and I just started to cry. It felt like I finally knew who it really was that was soothing my nerves at the end of the day and making driving in Phoenix so much easier while listening to her in my car. And there is no real way to thank someone like Nanci for her contributions to my life...I simply have to continue to enjoy. I'm sure anyone reading this understands.

The first time I heard a Nanci Griffith song was in the mid 80's. I was living in Los Angeles at the time..(I grew up in rural SE Ohio)...and I thought who IS this woman with that annoying voice !!! The song was FROM A DISTANCE...(written by the EXCEPTIONALLY talented Julie Gold, who also wrote HEAVEN and SOUTHBOUND TRAIN for Nanci). Well...I NOW own all of Nanci Griffith's CD's and have come to love her unique sound. I've seen her perform live several times...the most moving concert was at Carnagie Hall for OTHER VOICES....

I couldn't pick a favorite song or CD if I had to. They're ALL my favorites. I DO hope she records more of Julie Gold's music though. They seem to be kindred spirits.

I first saw Nanci on a clip from Austin City Limits. She was singing "Once In A Very Blue Moon." I was struck by her sweetness and sincerity, and went out to buy the album (yes album) the next day. It was hard to find, but I eventually located it at Tower Records in Berkeley. Loved it, and went back for the older ones. Loved them. The first time I saw her was at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. Like most in the audience, I had never heard her speak. In fact, there was a bit of a titter when she first spoke. But then the music started, and the magic began. Now when she spoke between songs, we listened to what she was saying, instead of the tone of her voice. I've seen her as often as possible since then, in fact just missed seeing her in Dublin, by a week. And, while I've yet to go with the same person twice, all have loved the evening, the music, and her. I hope continues to explore, change, evolve, and create. I just hope she continues to share it with us.

The first time: My wife Maggi and I are from Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England. We went on a trip to San Francisco and being music lovers we headed straight for Tower records. I picked up a tape of Nanci's music and loaded it up for the journey to LA. Now America is enough of a buz for any human being but travelling miles across state to the sounds of Nanci Griffith and the total reality that her music delivers was too much! The emotional cork was popped and we were hooked. What a gift. Thank you so much Nanci and thank you guys (creators and contributors) for a great web site!

We see you!
Lots of Love.

I studied at Maynooth University in Ireland for six months in 1998. Just at the time I was most homesick and longing to hear American Accents, eat hamburgers, and choose not to eat potatoes at supper, I discovered that Nanci was coming to Dublin as part of her "Other Voices, Too" tour. So I bought tickets and took my host mom. It was one of the most touching experiences of my life-- a little bit of Irish America in the middle of Dublin. I had been an ardent fan for a couple of years, but that night solidified my love for Nanci's music.

Nanci, your music has meant so much to my sisters and me-- your songs are poetry, and you speak so honestly to the heart. We love singing your songs, and I want to thank you for sharing such an important part of your life with others.

Hi, My name is Chapman James. I am a Folk Critic for the BeSonic Website by night and in the Merchandising Department of Books-a-Million Corporation.

I have been a devoted listener to Nanci's music since about 1988 when I was floored by a Juli Gold tune she did and went on to enjoy her multitude of recordings since then. I am sitting here listening to her rendition of Townes Van Zandt's "Tower Song" for about the 100th time (on the "POET" tribute album) and of course I have tears in my eyes and again a renewed desire to keep my beloved relationships close and genuine.

What I love about Nanci apart from her tremendous talent and tireless spirit is her humility as an artist in a time when anyone who is anyone in the entertainment field closely guards what they deem to be "Theirs" and does all in their power to promote themselves, what they do and what they create. I would daresay anyone that follows Nanci's career for any length of time will come across a complete family of other inspiring individuals that have touched her and therefore are shared with everyone with whom she comes in contact. I would never have listened (purposefully) to Juli Gold, Patrick Algers, Townes Van Zandt, Bill Staines, Lyle Lovett...had Nanci not recorded, plugged and praised them so. Good writing is what interests her the most and it keeps her on my CD player for this reason. An artist that allows me the pleasure of becoming a better person as well as being entertained deserves a special place after this "tour" on earth. Tell Nanci she is appreciated.

Sincerely,

Chapman James

I was 10 years old and I had just received a CD player. Needless to say it also came with CD's. Since my parent's were not into the pop rock I received mixes of folk, country, and old rock music. (and to that I am grateful) When I listened to "Country Gold" I knew I had found my music!

I saw Nanci at my alma mater, Texas Lutheran College. It was either 1977 or 1978 and she was opening act for Mike Williams. One of my friends bought a tape of Mike Williams at the concert. I saw Nanci about a year later at a small concert at Stephen F Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Tx. I bought her album THERE'S A LIGHT BEYOUND THESE WOODS after the concert. I have 10 CDs and didn't realize I'd gotten so far behind...
Anymore oldies out there listening?
