Morristown, NJ Concert!Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 09:06:41 -0500We thought the show on March 14, 2000 was fabulous! I've been waiting to see Nanci and the Blue Moon orchestra for years. Rodney and Guy were great and when they all played together it was really magical. The song list was great and the sound was really well done! For the northern NJ fans, the Community Theater in Morristown is an excellent place for Music. It's small enough to make the event very close. Can't wait to see Nanci again! Rich Dixson Croydon concertDate: Thu, 11 May 2000 21:18:55 +0100The set list was as follows, excluding the 6 items which the Symphony Orchestra did (three at the start of each half) - Trouble in the Fields Love at the Five and Dime These Days in an Open Book Nobody's Angel Gulf Coast Highway Drops From the Faucet Travelling Through This Part of You (Intermission) Always Will Not My Way Home Outbound Plane It's a Hard Life Late Night Grande Hotel Tell Me How This Heart Wing and the Wheel If I Had a Hammer (Encore) Well Allright An excellent concert in an impressive venue. Nanci looked stunning - I don't know if she is putting on weight or not, but she is sure looking good. And she really seemed to be enjoying herself, with some nice rapport between her and the conductor (even though it was the BBC Orchestra, the conductor was Andrew Pryce Jackman who conducted the LSO on Dust Bowl Symphony). The highlights for me were Trouble in the Fields - has she EVER performed that other than superbly? - Gulf Coast Highway, Not My Way Home and Late Night Grande Hotel. The one new song - Travelling Through This Part of You - is striking on first listening, and will I suspect quickily become a favourite. During the intro she mentioned her trip to Vietnam and Eric Taylor, Eric's response being that he wished all his ex-wives would go to Vietnam! A wonderful evening all round. Mike Barrett Nanci In Concert 17/5/00Date: Sat, 18 May 2000 05:46:44 -0800From 'Speed Of The Sound Of Lonliness' to 'The Road To Aberdeen" this was wonderful from start to finish. If only there was a video available. David Hey Cambridge UK concertDate: Wed, 14 Jun 2000 01:13:31 +0100I have been a fan for several years, having first heard Nanci on BBC Radio 2. I saw her live for the first time last month, in Cambridge England. It was a warm night, and too hot and humid to do justice to the band. Having said that, I thought Nanci and the Blue Moon Orchestra performed very well in spite of Nanci having "a frog living rent-free" in her throat. Nanci performed several of my favourite numbers, the best of which was "The Flyer". It may have been the fault of the venue, or of the hot night, but I felt she never seemed to really get the audience behind her, and though the concert was technically very good it lacked atmosphere. I was taken aback however, by the voice of her backing vocalist Lee Satterfield, who performed her own composition, "I will not forget you" in the second set. The rest of the audience seemed to be equally impressed, and Lee got a warm round of applause. Lee surely deserves her own album, and I will be first in the queue when it is released. Does anybody know if and when this is likely to happen? Lorna Harrison Birmingham, England 8th October concertDate: Tue, 9 Oct 2001 12:56:07 +0100We attended Nanci's concert at the Birmingham Symphony Hall (England) last night. Like Lorna (previous review of Cambridge concert) our experience was that she didn't rouse the audience until much later in the set - no fault of Nanci's just the usual apathy of a British audience. I do think that some people come to a concert and sit down saying "OK now entertain me" instead of reaching out to the artist. There was a thin seam of enthusiasts who cheered and whooped now and then (Tom Russel's response from stage being "hey lets not get carried away hear") - chuckles all round. The Blue Moons' new lead guitar played the odd bum note but otherwise OK. Tom Russell's' guitarist was phenomenal. His fret hand shot around like a demented spider. His playing was so rapid at one stage that sight was out of sync. with sound - incredible and accurate execution. Nanci looked pale and ghostlike. Her voice was wonderful but again her throat was playing intermittent host to a small frog which she treated with copious swigs of neat Vodka from a tumbler size glass (at least she told us it was Vodka). There was a little too much rhetoric on the efforts of innumerable people working for mine field clearances and such for my liking but hey its Nanci's show. The BMO were a little ragged at times but then I guess that keeps that "Folksy" feeling - a pristine delivery is not necessarily what its about. Nanci did favourites - Trouble In The Fields, Flyer, Snowing, Gulf Coast Highway, From A Distance and other spine chillers which I\we thoroughly enjoyed. We were bitterly disappointed that she didn't do Five & Dime. I couldn't believe that she left that out! This review has probably done me no good at all - I am a great Nanci fan but I think (through no fault of hers) the show did not really take off. It may have been the venue, I think it was the underwhelmed, anally retentive audience. While Nanci looked beautiful she also looked a bit drained. Her delivery did not reflect this at all. She has smiles and energy enough to power a city. She made us feel that she was singing to us - her roaming gaze constantly scanned all of the audience which should have made them feel very much a part of what was going on. She is the consummate performer - she exudes love for her art and for all of humanity. I am frustrated that we have no way of giving to her to the same degree. other than to support her causes and buy all of her albums - do you think that that is enough? I don't. If you go to a Nanci concert for heavens sake get your bloody rocks off and enjoy!!
Chris Lewis Savannah, GA. (May 3, 2002) concertDate: Wed, 22 May 2002 21:34:51 -0400My husband and I attended Nanci's concert in Savannah, GA.(May 3, 2002) It was fabulous, thank you, Nanci!! Nanci said during one introduciton that she likes everyone to take something home with them in their hip-pocket. Well, she certainly gave the packed house something to take home, except I took it home in my heart. Nanci's song, Goodnight New York was beautiful. Tears streamed down my face while I tried to stifle a sob. Thank you to Nanci for not forgetting, for me the pain of 9/11 seems to grow worse everyday. My husband and I were touched by this song and following it with From A Distance was just beautiful. If you ever read this, Nanci, I thank you. I'll remember your show always, thanks for coming to Savannah. |
